Insurance in Alberta:

The SPF.#1 – Alberta Standard Automobile Policy is the contract that the owner of a vehicle is required by law to have in place if he/she wants to drive a vehicle. This contract covers the owner of the vehicle as an “Insured”. The definition of “Insured” includes, “…,every other person who with his consent personally drives the automobile, ….against the liability imposed by law upon the Insured or upon any such person for loss or damage arising from the ownership, use and operation of the automobile…”   Therefore, if your driver has the permission of the owner/insured to drive him home in his/her own automobile, it follows that your driver is an “Insured” under the terms of the contract.  Insofar as you or your designated driver has no insurable interest in the automobile you cannot insure it.

You cannot buy a SPF #1 policy to cover the vehicles your designated drivers may drive. There is no need to do so as they are already covered by the policy that the owner has on the vehicle.
